Maki Sushi. Detailed Recipe for Everyone


Maki sushi is classical Japanese dish, popular all over the world. They are served in the most of Japanese restaurants and loved by most of people. Some of them try to cook this delicacy at home. First, you`ll need to know that there two types of rolls.

·         Hosomaki are then rolls with one or two ingredients. For cooking one roll, you need to use a half of the nori list;

·         Futomaki are thicker. They are filled with three or more ingredients. That`s why all the nori list should be used.

Today we`ll cook hosomaki rolls. Let`s look at the most important ingredients used.

For cooking maki sushi, we`ll use special rice – sushi-meshi. It`s sticky, so rolls can be formed without any problems. Instead of Arborio rice, you may use short grain rice. The result will be the same.

Another important ingredient, you should definitely buy beforehand is red salmon. Traditionally raw fish is used. However, you may choose salty salmon. And here is the list of ingredients, you may use to enrich the taste of the Japanese snack:

·         Shrimp

·         Smocked eel

·         Cucumber

·         Avocado

·         Philadelphia (or any other creamy cheese)

·         Japanese omelet

·         Sweet pepper

It`s also important to find the perfect combination of the ingredients. Classical choice is the mixture of salmon, rice and cucumber. And here are more interesting ideas:

Maki sushi are traditionally served with wasabi, marinated ginger and soy sauce. Now, when you know the theory, let`s get down to cooking.

  1. To begin with, you`ll need to cook the rice. Wash it carefully. Fill the pan with the water and add rice. You`ll need about 550 ml of water to cook this portion of rice.
  2. Put the pan on the oven, cover it with the lid and boil. It will take about 4-6 minutes. Then slow down the fire and cook grain for 12-15 minutes until there is no water in the pan.
  3. Leave the rice for 15 minutes to cool down.
  4. Meanwhile you`ll need to mix vinegar, salt and sugar in the small bowl. Cook it on the slow fire until the sugar and salt melt.
  5. Then put all the rice into the ceramic pot. Cover it with the warm vinegar and mix everything, using a wooden spatula. Be careful not to mash the rice.
  6. Then you`ll need to leave it to cool down again.
  7. Prepare the ingredients for the filling. Peel the cucumber carefully. Get rid of the seeds and cut the vegetable into thin long slices.
  8. Cut red salmon into long slices as well.
  9. Cut avocado in two pieces, peel it and cut it into slices.
  10. Fill the bowl with the warm water and put it near your working place. Cut nori in two pieces.
  11. Put it on the sushi mat. Wet your hands and grab a handful of rice. Cover the list of nori with it. Do not mash it!
  12. Wet your hands again. Cover the rice with the thin layer of wasabi.
  13. Form a long hole in the middle of the rice layer.
  14. Then you`ll need to form a tight roll, using a sushi mat. Be careful not to spoil the form of the roll.
  15. Do the same with the rest of ingredients. Wet the knife and cut all the rolls into small pieces.

Now you`re done. Serve these classical rolls with wasabi, ginger and soy sauce. Your close people will like this simple sushi set, so you may definitely add this recipe for maki roll into collection of your favorites.
